Working Class Housing in Downtown Chattanooga, the 1890s

A view of the City of Chattanooga from the late 1890s. Photographs of this size and quality of downtown cross streets are rare for the period. This apartment house was located two blocks west of the Read House.

According to a handwritten notation on the reverse, at left is the Prather Family. Homer and Mattie Geese are in the center window above the Prathers and the Loveland Family is to the right. The other people in the second story windows are not identified.

The photograph is stamped E. E. Geese of Chattanooga. He specialized in views of the Chickamauga National Park (and other historical points). More than likely he was kin to Homer and Hattie. Click the image below for a closer look.
